High angle
High angle shots are often used to convey a lack of power or weakness.
In The Avengers (2012) director Joss Whedon uses an overshot of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) before they are overwhelmed by a horde or alien invaders. Towards the end of Serenity (2005), another film directed by Joss Whedon, he films The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) from a high angle as he admits “there is nothing left to see.”
Keep in mind that the language of film is complex and subtle. A high angle shot doesn’t always have to convey a sense of weakness or lack of power. Nevertheless, when you’re next shooting a scene, think about how you can use this camera angle to your advantage.
